The Great Wall

Today is the day!  We are headed to the Great Wall!
Sean wisely signed us up for a tour guide in Beijing.  No one else signed up for the tour so we ended up having our own personal guide for our time in Beijing.  It was great!
This morning our guide picked us up in our hotel lobby at 8am.  We took a private car 1hr and 45 min out of the city to the Jinshanling section of the Great Wall.  (Technically we were going to hike from Simitai West to Jinshanling) Our driver dropped us off at a trail head.  For there we hiked 45 minutes up hill to reach the wall.  Our trail met up with the Great Wall at the Eat tower with 5 holes also known as “5 eye tower” (another literally named place).  From there we walked 4km to Jinshanling. Now 4 km may not sound like a lot, but it was actually incredibly difficult.  The first section of our hike was completely unrestored.  Stairs were all different sizes, most of them missing or just crumbly rocks.  The next section had workers working to reinforce the stairs and the last section was completely restored.

On our hike we learned that the Great Wall is 6000 miles long and took over 100 years to build.  We also learned that sticky rice was used as mortar during the Great Wall construction.
After our hike we stopped at a small farmer’s restaurant where we ate a LOT of simple, delicious food.

From there our driver met up with us and took us back to our hotel.
For Dinner we decided to head to Da Dong for some Duck!  It was delicious, although I do think I prefer Typhoons! duck.
