Sifnos

We arrived in Sifnos around 11pm the night before, so we didn’t really get a chance to check things out.  I was so excited to wake up and start exploring.  The first thing I noticed were the beaches!  They were incredible.  The sand was super fine and sparkly! (I kid you not!)  Unfortunately because Sifnos is a smaller, less travelled Island, and we were visiting outside of high season, there was NO one there, few restaurants open, and literally the only way to get around the island was by car rental.  (the buses only ran once a day) SO even though we were going to try and forgo a car rental, we ended up having to rent one.

Our first stop on our tour of Sifnos was Vathy.  Vathy is well known for their beaches.  We spent the morning laying out, soaking up the rays.  When it was time for lunch, we were unable to find a restaurant open in Vathy, so we packed up and headed to the next town.

What does this sign mean?

Platys Gialos, is another beach town.  Here we were able to find a small restaurant that was actually open.  We had a delicious lunch of lamb, chicken, Greek Salad and Tzatziki and made friends with another furry cat.

No one here but us

After lunch we hopped in the car and drove out to Kastro (at the recommendation of some other lunch patrons).  Kastro is an ancient, medieval city on Sifnos. It was built as a fortress and was originally the capital of Sifnos.  All of the building are attached to each other and there are only 5 entrances to the city.  There are also, sections of the ancient wall still standing and you can visit the Archeological museum of Sifnos.  Unfortunately when we arrived, we did not know any of this.  We think we maybe saw the wall but it wasn’t clearly marked. And we couldn’t quite find our way into the city.  Oh well!

From Kastro we drove to a few other towns and enjoyed views of the beautiful country side.  By sunset, the weather was already starting to turn.  It was no longer warm, and the clouds had moved in.

We headed back to Kamares (the port we were staying near) for dinner.  The options were limited and the food was just OK.  After dinner we wandered back to the hotel as there really wasn’t anything else going on anywhere that we could tell.
